IS IT HARD TO GET A U.S. TOURIST VISA?
Is it hard to get a U.S. tourist visa? There is no denying that obtaining a U.S. tourist visa is challenging for Vietnamese, especially for young individuals who have never traveled overseas and have no strings attached to Vietnam. To successfully apply for a U.S. tourist visa, you must carefully review the visa application procedures and avoid the following cases being rejected in your U.S. tourist visa applications.
1. Insufficient and indefinite US visa application
A US tourist visa application is evaluated as the basis for the Embassy to consider the applicant’s visa application. Whether it is difficult to apply for a US visa depends almost entirely on the status of your application. Therefore, to avoid making the mistake of a “invalid visa application”, you need to prepare well the following documents as required by the Consulate:
Ordinal number | Documents for U.S Tourist visa: |
---|---|
1 | Proof of family
|
2 | Proof of occupation:
|
3 | Proof of financial resources (if available): A savings account statement showing a minimum balance of $5,000. Additionally, other valuable documents such as property deeds, stock certificates, vehicle ownership, and securities. |
4 | Travel Itinerary:
|
Note:
Besides, having a well-built application is important, but to successfully apply for a US visa, you must first meet the requirements set by the US Consulate.
With over 15 years of experience in US visa applications, Immigration Global has identified common mistakes made by applicants, such as missing documents, non-compliant documents, or bringing only photocopies, which the US Consulate does not accept.
If you are unsure about preparing a perfect visa application on your own, consider contacting Immigration Global for assistance.
2. Financial capacity is insufficient
Among the documents required for applying for a US visa, you must demonstrate sufficient financial capacity with a savings account holding a minimum balance of $5,000.
Many applicants mistakenly think that proving they can cover the trip’s expenses is enough to secure a US visa. However, the US consulate evaluates whether applicants have adequate financial resources to handle any unexpected expenses during their trip. This is because the US government is concerned about illegal immigrants entering the country and potentially staying to work illegally,…

3. Losing in the US Visa Interview:
If obtaining a US visa is essential, then a successful interview is crucial for determining whether your application will be approved. While you can receive full support from Immigration Global during the preparation stage, your performance during the interview ultimately decides your success or failure.
The US visa interview is often dreaded by many applicants because a significant number of people fail due to poor performance during the interview. The primary goal of the interview is for the consular officer to verify the purpose of your visit. Therefore, if you seem confused or give vague answers that don’t match the information on your DS-160 form, the consular officer may suspect you of dishonesty and reject your visa application.
Based on successful US visa application experiences, the visa interview can be manageable if you adhere to these guidelines:
- Dress respectfully and modestly, avoiding any revealing or inappropriate attire for the interview.
- Maintain a calm and confident demeanor, and make eye contact with the interviewer when responding to questions.
- Speak clearly and loud enough to hear, without interrupting the interviewer.
- Be honest and straightforward in your responses, providing clear and complete answers.
Additionally, you must convince to the Consular officer that you plan to return to Vietnam after your scheduled stay in the US.
By now, you probably have a clear answer to the question of whether it is difficult to apply for a US visa. The process can be both challenging and straightforward. It is challenging because the US visa application procedure is quite complex. Without experience and knowledge in this area, it is unlikely that you will successfully obtain a US visa.
Conversely, the process is not difficult if you have a strong visa application, relevant experience, and a thorough understanding of the procedures and requirements. In summary, with proper preparation, it is entirely possible to successfully apply for a US visa.

Before beginning the preparation steps, you need to understand how many types of U.S. student visas there are.
1.1. U.S. Student Visa Type F
The “F” visa is considered the most common type of U.S. student visa. Any student wishing to attend high school, language school, college, or university in the U.S. can be granted this type of visa, provided the school is authorized by the U.S. government to enroll international students. There are three types of F visas that students need to be aware of:
– F1 Student Visa: This visa is granted to students enrolled in a full-time course of study in the U.S. With an F1 visa, you can work part-time for a minimum of 20 hours per week, provided you have permission from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). Additionally, this visa allows students to participate in a one-year internship program after graduation.
– F2 Dependent Visa: This visa is for dependents of F1 visa holders, including spouses and unmarried children under 21. It is also available to same-sex spouses.
– F3 Border Commuter Student Visa: This visa allows parents with U.S. citizenship to sponsor their children over 21 years old living in another country (Canada and Mexico) to study in the U.S.
1.2. U.S. Student Visa Type M
After the F visa, the M visa is also common for international students in the U.S. However, this visa is specifically for students enrolled in non-academic or vocational studies. Similar to the F visa, the M visa has three types:
– M1 Vocational Student Visa: This visa is granted to students pursuing vocational or non-academic studies. The duration of the M1 visa is under one year and does not allow for part-time work.
– M2 Dependent Visa: This visa is for dependents of M1 visa holders, including spouses and unmarried children under 21. It is also available to same-sex spouses.
– M3 Border Commuter Student Visa: This visa is for students living in other countries like Canada and Mexico but studying vocational or non-academic courses in the U.S.
1.3. U.S. Student Visa Type J
The J visa is for students participating in exchange programs sponsored by private or government organizations. It is the least common type of U.S. student visa. Each exchange program has its criteria, and students must meet these to be eligible for the J visa. The maximum duration of the J visa is one or two semesters. There are two types of J visas:
– J1 Exchange Visitor Visa: For international students participating in cultural exchange programs in the U.S. If students want to change their program or apply for permanent residency, they must return to their home country for at least two years before reapplying.
– J2 Dependent Visa: This visa is for dependents of J1 visa holders, including spouses and unmarried children under 21. It is also available to same-sex spouses.
2. Conditions for Obtaining a U.S. Student Visa
To apply for an F1 or M1 visa, applicants must meet the following conditions:
– The F1 visa applicant must be a citizen of a country not included in the U.S. Visa Waiver Program. A list of Visa Waiver Program countries can be found on the USCIS website.
– Have an official acceptance letter from a U.S. school or educational organization listed in the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP).
– Have sufficient financial resources to cover the cost of study and living in the U.S. You should prove that you have enough money in your bank account to cover the cost of study and living in the U.S. This does not mean students are ineligible for scholarships. In fact, you are encouraged to apply for scholarships to ease financial burdens.
– The F1 visa applicant must have a clean criminal record. If the applicant has a criminal record, they need to provide documents proving they have been pardoned or had their record expunged.
– Prove the intent to return to their home country after the visa expires. You need to provide documents proving you have strong ties to your home country and intend to return after your studies.
– Proficiency in English. You must demonstrate your ability to speak and understand English at a level that allows you to enroll in an academic program by taking standardized English proficiency tests such as TOEFL or IELTS.
3. Documents Required for a U.S. Student Visa Application
Applicants for an F1 visa must prepare the following documents required by the U.S. Consulate or Embassy in Vietnam:
Necessary Visa Application Documents
To apply for an F1 or M1 visa, you need the following documents:
– A valid passport with at least six months of validity remaining.
– Form DS-160 for non-immigrant visa applications.
– Two recent 5cmx5cm photos taken within the last six months, with a white background, without glasses or hats, facing the camera, not tilting your head or closing your eyes, with a neutral facial expression.
– SEVIS I-901 fee payment receipt.
– Form I-20 (Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant Student Status). This is the most important document for applying for an F1 or M1 visa.
– Proof of visa application fee payment.
– Interview appointment confirmation showing that you have paid the fee and scheduled an appointment on the Consulate’s website.
4. How Long Does It Take to Get a U.S. Student Visa?
Typically, the time to receive a visa from the moment you submit your application is about 5 to 9 days. The Consulate’s officer will review your application within about 2 days. If your application passes the review, it will take an additional 3 to 7 days, depending on your visa delivery address. However, if you need to provide additional documents, the processing time will be longer.
Preparing a U.S. Student Visa Application for 2024
Usually, your U.S. student visa application will be approved by a Consular officer within about 2 working days.
The process of preparing a complete application typically takes about 4 to 10 weeks. It takes about 3 days to 6 weeks to obtain the I-20 confirmation letter. During this time, you will spend about 2 to 4 weeks preparing financial documents. Finally, when everything is ready, you will need about 2 to 4 weeks to practice for the visa interview with the U.S. Consulate.
5. Some Interview Tips at the U.S. Consulate
5.1. Double-check All Documents in the U.S. Visa Application
Before the interview, you need to carefully check all the documents in your visa application. If you are missing any documents, you will have to cancel your appointment and reschedule another interview to provide the missing documents. This can be very time-consuming and may affect your interview results as well as your enrollment timing.
5.2. Prepare Common Interview Questions
Searching for and preparing common interview questions helps you feel more confident and reduces the likelihood of being caught off guard by familiar questions. There are three common questions asked during visa interviews:
1 – Why did you choose the U.S. as your study destination?
You can answer that the U.S. is a very advanced country with significant technological, scientific, and educational advancements. You admire this development and want to learn from it and apply what you learn to help develop your home country.

2 – Why did you choose this university?
For this question, everyone will have different answers. You should highlight some outstanding advantages of the university and your chosen major. Additionally, a school with many international students is a common reason many students choose it.
3 – What are your plans after graduation? For plans after graduation, you should provide a clear and detailed answer. You can say that you want to stay in the U.S. to work for 1 to 2 years to gain experience, but then you will return to Vietnam to work.
5.3. Answer Quickly, Concisely, and Accurately
The purpose of the visa interview is to verify the information in your application and assess your attitude and suitability as a student. Therefore, you need to be familiar with the information provided in your application. When asked about these details, provide quick, concise, and accurate answers to build trust and credibility with the interview panel.
5.4. Maintain a Relaxed Mentality
Entering the interview with a relaxed mindset helps you avoid mistakes caused by nervousness. Instead, you can showcase your communication skills and confidence in your answers.
Therefore, before the interview, avoid cramming or putting too much pressure on yourself. Take time to rest and relax after the hard work of preparing your application and studying for the interview.
During the interview, the more confident you are, the better impression you will make. However, confidence is different from over-expressing yourself. Treat the interview like a normal conversation and answer all questions confidently. If possible, present your answers in a storytelling manner to engage the interviewer.
The interview will be conducted entirely in English. However, if there is a difficult question that you cannot express in English, do not hesitate to ask if you can explain it in Vietnamese. If your reason is reasonable, they may allow you to answer some questions in your native language.
